A tradition and a science
Herbal medicines are plant-based medicines made from differing combinations of plant parts e.g. leaves, flowers or roots. Each part can have different medicinal uses and the many types of chemical constituents require different extraction methods. Both fresh and dried plant matter are used, depending on the herb.
Herbal Medicine is considered the most ancient form of healing. Herbs have been used in most traditional cultures and remain the main form of medicine in many cultures today. They have had a major influence on many systems of medicine, including traditional Chinese medicine, Ayurvedic (Indian) medicine, Native American, Indigenous Australian medicine and also conventional medicine. Up until recently herbal medicines were the mainstay of orthodox doctors.
As a herbalist I take an holistic approach to illness, addressing the underlying cause of disease rather than just the symptoms. I recommend herbal remedies that can be used alone or alongside prescribed medication.
